Y’all Come Back Now, Ya Hear?

SXSW 2014 is officially over — and though we never like to celebrate the conclusion of a conference as big, smart and fun as South By is — can we all just breathe a collective “Whew?” Hop on your plane, lean that seat back, order a decaf tea and zone out. For the next couple days. Seriously — we all deserve it.

Nine full days of tech talks about outer space, dinosaurs and who really owns our online data can exhaust the brain. Worse, the multiple parties, drinks and hours of lost sleep that follow don’t help. SXSW is basically spring break for grown ups — and probably with a lot more free alcohol than your college versions.

But don’t break for too long because the plans for SXSW 2015 are already underway (seriously, we’re having an Umbel meeting about it next week!). As everyone who attended looks back on the ups and downs of this year’s event, and begins to plans for next year — let’s take a quick look back at what exactly your friends at Umbel were up to!

Umbel + Vox Media Party

In Umbel’s first official SXSW party, we partnered up with client Vox Media to host the kickoff party of the year. Local Natives stole the show (in the best possible way) and The Daily Dot, AT&T, Samsung, AdColony and Republic Tequila helped pull in the coolest techies in the city to make sure everyone had a great first night of South By.

As far as the next day goes, we claim no (OK, maybe just a little) responsibility.

Interactive Tradeshow

Beginning Sunday and throughout the interactive portion of SXSW, Umbel set up shop at the Austin Convention Center to showcase our product and talk tech with passerbys. There, we met up with the Knight Foundation, NASA, NASCAR, Turner, and a slew of friends, clients and new faces to talk business and big data.

There was also beer, provided by the Meetup Pavilion — because, after all, it was SXSW.

Umbelers Out on the Town

Between working the party and the tradeshow, Umbel employees were pretty busy for the majority of SXSW. Of course, that doesn’t mean that we didn’t take advantage of our badges and stand in our fair share of lines to see bands we love, listen to talks that boggled our brains, get a glimpse of a few celebs and overall enjoy the city we love most, Austin!

It Comes to a Close

We want to send out a big “thank you!” to everyone who made it to SXSW 2014, whether you ran into one of us or not. SXSW is one of the events that keeps Austin so weird, cultured and seriously smart.

We can’t wait to see who comes back next year (after all, we already covered who was in attendance this year), ready to party, learn and enjoy Austin at its best.

For those who are interested in supporting SXSW Cares, a fund set up to support the victims of the March 13 accident on Red River, here is a handy link to make a donation via the Austin Community Foundation.
