Last month we celebrated two new spaces—our new office in downtown Austin, Texas and our new website at umbel.com.
When we started our search for a new office space, as any good nerdy startup would, we sent out a Google survey to all the employees asking what they would want in an ideal office. At the risk of deserving a #firstworldproblem tag, our survey revealed we wanted to be close to downtown, close to a park, walking distance from lots of food and coffee, have access to a gym and shower, good parking, natural light, and near a jogging/biking trail among other things. As a “realist” knowing we were working with a start-up’s budget, I thought, “Yea, right, we’ll never find all that.” However, our friends as Urbanspace Realtors hooked us up with nearly everything we asked for—within budget. Does that ever happen? With a few improvements, we promptly moved in and began enjoying our light-filled, open floor plan flanked by private phone booths, a conference room and brainstorming areas. Concurrently, we started working on our new online space. We sought to build a website that could grow as our company grows. We needed a way to explain what Umbel does, who it benefits, and a platform to distribute so much of the valuable intelligence we are stockpiling as we help our clients find better ways to understand their audience. After a some long nights, early mornings and working closely with the great UX and design masters at Smith, we are thrilled to have launched the scalable platform we envisioned. To celebrate our new spaces, we hosted an Open House for our clients, investors and friends. We enjoyed bragging about our Umbel team, our latest product features, and some good, clean thumb wrestling matches. Yes, I did say thumb wrestling. Our mascot, El Umbel (another story I’ll save for later), is obsessed with thumb wrestling, so we invited guests to slip a mask over their thumb and duke it out.
Sore thumbs aside, it was great to tell Umbel’s latest stories with a backdrop of enthralling wrestling movies and conversations with smart friends. As a local startup, we are extremely appreciative of all the support we received from our amazing local businesses. Thanks to HomeSlice Pizza—you know our crowd can never get enough of those delicious pies and SugaPlump pastries for the delicious dessert in the form of moist and perfectly-proportioned cake balls. Big thanks, also, to IceWorks, Deep Eddy Vodka, Republic Tequila and Pedernales Brewing Company for quenching the thirsts of us all so well.
